At Session 33 “Transcending the Cold-War Mentality: A Fresh Outlook on Security Architecture in the Asia Pacific”, Bob HAWKE, former Prime Minister of Australia, stated that the key issue in Asia’s security is the way that Sino-American relationship develops in the future. He contended that discussion on security issues should pay attention to real circumstances rather than focus only on empty academic research. HAWKE said that security in Asia Pacific is not decided solely by the will of the state leaders, but also various geopolitical incidents, such as the conflicts in Middle East. While both China and US are concerned about the conflicts, they have different purposes and adopt different actions. HAWKE believed that security in the Middle East and the world would improve if China and US could work together to solve the Middle East problems.
