Amory LOVINSL: We should be Determined to Reduce the Usage of Fossil Fuels

On 27th March, during the Session 8, "smog and health", Amory Lovins, Founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute, pointed out that by increasing the energy efficiency to reduce the air pollution is not the fundamental way to treat the root cause. We should be determined to reduce the usage of fossil fuel too.

According to his reasearch, using renewable energy and increasing energy efficiency together can help reduce 90% of the energy consumption. If the proportion of non- fossil fuel in total energy consumption increases to 50%, by 2050 China's economy will be more than 7 times of the current amount. And the energy consumption will be just a little bit higher. Thus Amory suggests, China's energy policy should aim at using less fossil fuel and increasing cost effectiveness.

Moreover,  Lovins also believes that china should take energy efficiency into account when building its infrastructure. If people start with the right track at the beginning, they do not have to adapt their products to the new energy requirements in the future which will cost them much more. He also suggests that when China works on smog problem, it should not follow the example of London and Los Angeles but find the unique Chinese way to solve the problem.
