Career at Mitsui & Co.: June 2000, Representative Director, Executive Managing Director cum General Manager of Corporate Planning Division; April 2002, Representative Director, Senior Executive Managing Officer, Chief Strategic Officer, Chief Operating Officer of Business Process Re-Engineering Project; October 2002, Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer; April 2009, Chairman of the Board of Directors. Professional Affiliations: Vice Chairman of the Japan Business Federation “Nippon Keidanren” (2007-2011); Counselor to the Policy Board of the Bank of Japan (2007 - present); Chairman of the Japan Foreign Trade Council, Inc. (2010 - 2014). Shoei Utsuda joined Mitsui & Co., Ltd. in 1967. After his return from his first multi-cultural experience at Dartmouth College in 1970, he was mainly engaged in the promotion of the electric machinery business and ICT business until he was appointed as a member of the board in 1997. Mr. Utsuda was promoted to President & CEO of Mitsui & Co., Ltd. in 2002 to tackle, reshape and rebuild the culture of the company and the mindset of its people, which was then suffering from painful compliance-related incidents. He is a strong believer in “Yoi shigoto” (good quality work), as the key driver to success in business. In his personal time, Shoei Utsuda enjoys golf, tennis and scuba diving with his family.
