Shan Jixiang is a Research Fellow, Senior Engineer and Registered Urban Planner. He started his research on the conservation and planning of historical cities and cultural heritage areas while studying in Japan from 1980 to 1984. After returning to China, he was successively appointed as Director of the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage, Secretary of the CPC of Fangshan District of Beijing, Director of Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning, and Director General of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage. In January 2012, he became the Director of the Palace Museum. He has been a member of the tenth, eleventh and twelfth National Committees of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), President of Cultural Relics Society of China, and Vice-Chairman of the Architectural Society of China. As a student of Professor Wu Liangyong (b.1922), an Academician of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, Dr. Shan studied urban planning and design and graduated with a Doctor of Engineering degree from the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University. He is a doctoral supervisor and adjunct professor of a number of universities and colleges, including Peking University and Tsinghua University. In March 2005, Dr. Shan received the International Leadership Award from the American Planning Association (APA). In September 2014, he was awarded the “Forbes Prize” by the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works. His published works include more than ten monographs such as Cultural Heritage • Thoughts and Practice, and over a hundred academic theses.
