Dr. Yong-Hak Kim received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Yonsei University, and his master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1986. Since beginning his professorship at Yonsei University in 1987, Dr. Kim had taken various senior administrative positions, including Vice-Director of Planning, Director of Admissions, and Dean of the University College, the College of Social Sciences, and the Graduate School of Public Administration. He became the 18th President of Yonsei University in February 2016. Recognized for his academic achievements, Dr. Kim received prestigious awards including the Yonsei University Academic Excellence Award, Gallup Outstanding Paper Award, National Academy of Sciences Outstanding Publication Award, and Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Outstanding Publication Award. He also served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Society and Rationality and Society, the two leading journals in sociology. Since his term as President, Dr. Kim has implemented the philosophical spirit of 3Cs (Christian Values, Creativity, Connectivity) as the guiding principle of Yonsei University. Based on this, he stipulated 10 policy tasks to be completed by 2020 under the title of “Future Challenges 10 by 20” in order to prepare for the next 100 years as a “future university.” In the midst of the great transition of the fourth industrial revolution, he is promoting convergence within the University, especially in teaching, research and social contribution. Under Dr. Kim’s leadership, Yonsei opened the Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment in April 2017 to lay the foundation of empathy and social engagement within Korea as well as all corners of the global community.
