Deputy Vice Chancellor, Coventry University

David Pilsbury has been Deputy Vice Chancellor, International at Coventry University since 2008.  He is responsible for all international activities including joint ventures, recruitment, collaborative delivery, curriculum internationalization, mobility and enhancement. He has implemented an ambitious agenda including: a significant increase in recruitment (with over 8,500 overseas students CU is the third largest recruiter; a further 4,500 students are recruited from continental Europe); it’s a major provider of programmes overseas with more than 18,000 students; he has established deep relationships with leading research Universities; and has developed a sector leading enhancement agenda - Coventry has been the leading provider of overseas mobility experiences since records began –delivered alongside extensive internationalization of the curriculum, innovative language programmes and systematic intercultural training. The scale and scope of activity has been recognised by many awards including a Queen’s Award for Enterprise – the most prestigious UK accolade for organisations - and the premier award of EAIE for ‘Innovation in Internationalisation’.  It has 5 stars” from QS, and the Chinese Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange recently named Coventry as ‘Best Overseas Partner for Chinese Universities’ for the second year running.  Pilsbury is a fellow of the Hong Kong VTC, a Board Member of China-Britain Business Council and Chairs the UUK International Pro-Vice Chancellors Network. Pilsbury was previously founding CEO of the Worldwide Universities Network which became recognized as the leading global research alliance under his leadership.  He was Head of Research Policy for the Higher Education Funding Council for England – where he oversaw a fundamental reappraisal of research policy and the creation of the Arts and Humanities Research Council.  Prior to this he was Assistant Director of R&D at Cambridge University Hospital. Pilsbury spent a number of years in strategic consultancy and investment banking after completing a D.Phil and postdoctoral research at Oxford University.
