Dr. Xiaoming Shen graduated from Wenzhou Medical College in 1984 and received medical degree. He secured PhD from Shanghai Second Medical University (SSMU, current name Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine after merging with Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2005) in 1991 and joined its faculty of pediatrics. He undertook his post-doctoral training in Division of Pediatric Environmental Sciences, Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, USA in 1994-1996. Dr. Shen was Director General of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, a tertiary health care provider jointly established by Shanghai Municipal Government and the US-based charity Project HOPE (1998), and President of Xinhua Hospital affiliated to SSMU (2000) and President of SSMU (2003) until he joined Shanghai Municipal Government as Director General of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission in 2006. He was elected Vice Mayor of Shanghai in January 2008, with extensive portfolio in health, education, and science-technology-innovation, etc. He was appointed member of the Standing Committee of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and Secretary of CPC Pudong New Area Committee in May 2013, and Chairman of Shanghai Free Trade Zone in April 2014. In September 2016, he was appointed as Vice Minister of Education, China. He took the new post as Governor of Hainan in May 2017. Dr. Shen was a worldwide-recognized medical professional before he shifted to governmental service. As a developmental pediatrician by training, he launched the first childhood lead poisoning program in China and successfully established universal newborn hearing screening program and his team is currently running the largest and most efficient newborn hearing screening program in the world. Dr. Shen’s efforts leaded to significant decrease of prevalence of childhood lead poisoning and language developmental disability due to congenital hearing impairment. He stayed on advisory committee for WHO Kobe Center for Health Development and was the Director of WHO Collaborative Center for Neonatal Health Care. Dr. Shen is a very productive author of about 300 scientific articles and chapters in books. Dr. Shen has lectured extensively worldwide, and been an adjunct professor at many institutions. He was granted Honorary Doctor Degree by University of Paris 5 in 2005, and Honorary Doctor Degree from University of Nebraska Medical Center, USA in 2010. He is Honorary Fellow of American Academy of Pediatrics, an honor given to very few pediatricians from outside USA and the first for China. THE LANCET published Dr. Shen’s profile in March, 2012 to recognize his role in translating medical researches into health policies to benefit children’s health in China. Dr. Shen was elected foreign associate of the Institute of Medicine (National Academy of Medicine), American Academies, in 2013.Dr. Shen is also a member of the 19th Central Committee of the CPC.
