He has been working in Tsinghua University, Beijing People's Broadcasting Corporation, China Economic Herald, NDRC Urban and Small Town Reform and Development Center. He has been awarded Chinese News Award and other important News Awards. Since 2009, Yang Yu has been the news commentator for CCTV Comprehensive Channel, CCTV News Channel and CCTV Chinese International Channel, generally on political news and economic news. His comments were delivered on CCTV News, Topics in Focus, Oriental Horizon, Morning News, CCTV News Broadcast, etc. It is worth mentioning that he has been the very first news commentator introduced in CCTV News over the past 40 years. During the 18th and 19th CPC National Congress, Yang Yu has been the news commentator on the lively broadcast of Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the meeting of the Standing Committee of the new Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee as well. He also participated in every year’s two sessions and plenary session of the Central Committee ever since 2009. He has been giving lectures to classes tailored for province-and-minister-level leaders and classes tailored for department-and-bureau-level leaders at the Central Party School and Pu Dong Cadre College. He served as an expert on Judicial Information Transmission for the Supreme People’s Court. He also gave lectures on instructive films of “party building studies” made by the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the CPC. In the year of 2017, to meet the 19th CPC National Congress, the central government has organized to shoot large thematic political TV Documentary Series named “Reform Till the End”, Yang Yu has been the Chief Contributor of the script of these films which yielded great influence over the country and have taken the first place among all the special awards nominated in the 14th session of spiritual civilization construction Five Ones Project.
