LU Bai Ph.D

Dr. Lu is a world renowned neuroscientist studying brain development and cognitive functions, and related brain diseases. His pioneering research has led to the discovery that the brain growth factor BDNF plays a key role in nerve cell communication and plasticity, and identified a critical genetic variant in the BDNF gene that affects memory and cognitive functions in human. He is currently a Professor in the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Tsinghua University, and a member of “Thousand Talent Plan” Scholar – China’s most prestigious award for oversea returnees. He has served many important leadership positions, including Executive Dean of Tsinghua University Medical School, Vice President of GlaxoSmithKline R&D, Chief of Neural Development and Plasticity Section, US National Institute of Health (NIH), and Associate Director of a trans-NIH translational medicine program. Dr. Lu obtained his Ph.D. in 1990 from Cornell University and did his postdoctoral training with Nobel Laureate Paul Greengard at Rockefeller University. He has received many honors including the Ray Wu Award, Mathilde Solowey Award, etc, and he was named by Thomson Reuters in 2014 as one of World’s Highly Cited Researchers, the only one in the neuroscience category named in China. In recent years, he has also devoted major efforts to science communication and co-founded an internet media “The-Intellectuals”, which is now the most influential science media in China.
