Hai Wen was born in 1952. He graduated from Peking University and obtained a doctorate from the University of California at Davis in 1991. He lectured at various universities in California and became a leading contributor to the study of China's economy in the USA, where he served as president of the China Economists Society in 1993. Professor Hai is currently Vice Chairman of Peking University Council, Founding Dean of Peking University HSBC Business School, Professor in Economics at the China Centre for Economic Research and HSBC Business School in Peking University.
His research has focused on international trade, development economics, and China’s economic transition. He has published many academic books and journal articles in English and Chinese, including American Economics Review, NBER Working Papers, and International Economic Review. He is one of the most respected teachers and has won the Outstanding Teacher Award at Peking University.
