Hao studied physics at Tsinghua University and gained herdegree in 2006. After that, she studied economics in Tsinghua University,obtained a doctoral degree in January 2013, and has been working as a macroeconomics researcher at China Development Research Foundation since then. She now serves as deputydirector of Department 1 (macroeconomic research team) at CDRF. She publishedmany of her research results on journals such as Comparative Economic & Social System and China Development Observation etc.

Hao is also a well-known science fiction writer and essayist.During the 10 years of writing, she published two novels Wandering Under the Vault of Heaven, and Born in 1984, collections of short stories Go to the Distance, TheLonely Depths, and one collection of her essays Europe in Time. She won the Hugo Award for Best Novelette for Folding Beijing at the 2016 Hugo Awards.
