Jim is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Plymouth Rock group of insurance companies, with annual revenues of over $1.2 billion. Jim began his career by teaching economics at Harvard, after earning a Ph.D. there in economics. He served as Massachusetts Commissioner of Insurance from 1975 to 1979 and then as Chairman and Commissioner of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission for four years as an appointee of President Carter. On his return from Washington, he founded Plymouth Rock. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Boston Globe, and as Vice Chairman of Global Post, a web-based worldwide news service. Jim has also served as chairman of the Board of Management Sciences for Health, a large international public health non-profit, and he currently serves as a member of the Board and the Executive Committee of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a non-profit genetic research institute. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, where he serves on the Finance Committee. Stone is the author of “One Way for Wall Street”, a book on the securities industry, and "Five Easy Theses: Commonsense Solutions to America's Greatest Economic Challenges" (May 2016), a New York Times Bestseller and a Bloomberg Best Books selection for 2016.  He has authored numerous articles on insurance, finance, and economics. Jim is married, and the father of twin children. He lives in Boston.
