Senior Advisor to the Board, Former Chairman, Nomura Holdings

Junichi Ujiie was appointed Senior Advisor to the Board of Nomura Holdings, Inc. since 2011 after serving as the company’s Chairman from April 2003 to June 2011. Ujiie joined Nomura Securities in 1975 and became president of Nomura Bank Switzerland in 1984 before returning to Japan in 1987 to serve as General Manager of the Corporate Planning Department. From 1990 to 1997, he was the President of Nomura Securities International in the United States and joined the Board of Directors of Nomura Securities in 1990. In 1997, he was appointed President and CEO of Nomura Securities, and from 2002 to 2003 he served as President and CEO of both Nomura Securities and Nomura Holdings. Outside Nomura, Ujiie ever held several key positions, including a member of the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council and the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s International Advisory Panel, Chairman of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Chairman of the Japan-U.S. Business Council, and Vice Chairman of Japan Business Federation in the past. Ujiie was also Director of the Center for Advanced Research in Finance at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Economics and wrote or edited books on economy and market including “The Challenge of Japanese Financial Markets”, “Keynesian–Monetarist Controversy”, etc. Born in October 1945, Ujiie studied at the University of Tokyo where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in economics. In 1972, he received a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Illinois and then in 1975 received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago.
