Lei Diansheng, an influential world traveller, embarked on a decade-long trek on October 20th, 1998, after ten years of intense training and preparation. By the time he completed the journey on November 8th, 2008, he had travelled across the entire China, including crossing the “No Man’s Land” Lop Nor in the harsh deserts of Xinjiang. Lei Diansheng hiked 81,000 km during this uninterrupted trip, setting the Guinness World Record for the longest distance walked. Lei Diansheng set out on the hike with the mission of learning about the different minorities, studying ecology, raising awareness for environmental protection, as well as adventuring in the forbidden grounds. Throughout the trip, he gained invaluable knowledge about tribal customs, ecology, history of China and collected cultural items weighing 2 tons. Wanting to share the experiences to others, Lei Diansheng founded a free-admission museum in Beijing in 2009, which won the Patriotic Educational Institution title by Changping District, Beijing in 2010. In 2012, the museum was given the title of Citizen Educational Institution. Later in the year, Lei Diansheng published his autobiography Ten Year Walk in China, which topped the charts for influential non-fiction books. With a curious mind and an unconquerable spirit, Lei Diansheng embarked on another trip following the routes of the Silk Road, planning to visit 20 countries and regions in the next three years commencing June 22nd, 2015.
