President, Yale University

Peter Salovey is the 23rd president of Yale University. With John D. Mayer, he developed a broad framework called “Emotional Intelligence,” the theory that just as people have a wide range of intellectual abilities, they also have a wide range of measurable emotional skills that profoundly affect their thinking and action. Salovey has also served as dean of the graduate school, dean of the college, and university provost at Yale. After receiving an A.B. (psychology) and A.M. (sociology) from Stanford University in 1980 with departmental honors and university distinction, Salovey earned a Ph.D. in psychology from Yale. He holds honorary doctorates from the University of Pretoria, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, National Tsing Hua University, and Harvard University. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.
