袁隆平，1930年生，享有“杂交水稻之父”盛誉，中国工程院院士，美国科学院外籍院士，任国家杂交水稻工程技术研究中心主任。1964年开始研究杂交水稻，1973年实现“三系”配套，并育成第一个强优组合。1976年，杂交水稻开始大面积推广，近年在我国年种植占水稻总面积的57％，年增产水稻可多养活7000万人口。目前，已实现超级稻第一、二、三期目标，并启动了超级杂交稻大面积亩产1000公斤的第四期目标攻关。他先后获得20项国内外奖励和荣誉。

Prof. Yuan Longping,“ Father of Hybrid Rice”, invented hybrid rice technology in 1970s. Hybrid rice covers 57% of total rice area in China and its grain yield increased can feed 70 million more people a year in China. Recently, he has achieved developing super high yield hybrid rice which can yield more than 13.5 tons per ha on large scale. Prof. Yuan has not only made this new technology to benefit China, but also has enthusiastically extended hybrid rice technology to other countries, and he has trained more than 3000 of scientists and researchers from over 25 countries and has served as a chief consultant to the FAO. Yuan’s excellent work on hybrid rice has benefited and will continue to benefit more people in the world.
