Dr. Elliot Hirshman serves as president of San Diego State University, a dynamic community that emphasizes internationalization, academic excellence, student success, community engagement, and diversity. SDSU is a leading public research university committed to addressing global challenges. Prior to his appointment at SDSU, Dr. Hirshman served as Provost and Senior Vice President for academic affairs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He also had been chief research officer at the George Washington University and had chaired the departments of psychology there and at the University of Colorado at Denver. He began his academic career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Hirshman, a fellow of the American Psychological Association, earned his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in economics and mathematics from Yale and his master’s degree and Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from UCLA. His research and teaching focus on the psychopharmacology of human cognition, using an interdisciplinary approach that involves collaboration among psychologists, medical doctors and statisticians.
