Following graduation and research in chemical engineering in the UK and France, Williams joined the Royal Dutch/Shell Group in the Netherlands in 1963. Across a career of 36 years, he fulfilled a number of capacities within the Shell organization including Managing Director of Shell Sweden, Vice President Oil Supply and Trading Europe, President of Shell Coal International and Managing Director of Shell International Gas. He eventually retired from Shell as Executive Chairman of Shell Australia. While leading Shell International Gas, Dr. Williams played a major part in developing LNG projects in Nigeria, Malaysia, Oman, Australia and Sakhalin and the Shell Middle Distillates Synthesis (SMDS) project in Malaysia. He also led the Australian effort resulting in the inaugural supply of LNG to China. After retiring from Shell, Dr. Williams spent 10 years on the boards of Origin Energy Ltd and Boral Limited. He now does consulting work in the USA, China, Japan and Australia. Dr. Williams was awarded the CBE for services to British-Australian relations. He speaks fluent French and Dutch.
