斯宾塞博士曾任牛津大学社会科学部部长。他在悉尼大学推出跨学科教研的新举措，建立查尔斯？珀金斯肥胖症糖尿病及心血管疾病中心、东南亚研究中心和中国研究中心。中国研究中心汇集130名学者从事现代中国经济、公共卫生、社会史等跨学科研究，旨在促进澳大利亚及世界深入了解中国。

Dr. Spence, formerly head of the Social Sciences Division at the University of Oxford, has set a new agenda in multi-disciplinary research and teaching for the University of Sydney, among the world’s leading research institutions. Under his leadership, new centres have been established including the Charles Perkins Centre on Obesity, Diabetes and Cardiac Disease, the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre with over 200 academics working on and in the region and the China Studies Centre, with around 130 members, which fosters multi-disciplinary work on modern China, particularly its economy, public health and social history. This Centre has an important role in developing Australia and the world’s understanding of China.
