Nik Gowing has been one of the main presenters for the BBC’s international 24-hour news channel BBC World News, since 1996. Nik also presents World Debates from the annual Davos gathering and other locations, as well as longer-form programmes and other output, including both studio and location coverage of major global stories. Nik was presenter of The Hub – with Nik Gowing and Dateline London, to which he brought his trademark qualities of rigorous interviewing and in-depth analysis, along with decades of personal journalistic experience in the field and his background insight. Nik’s extensive reporting experience has spanned across three decades specialising in diplomacy, defence and international security. In 2009 he published Skyful of Lies and Black Swans, a peer-reviewed study for the Reuter’s Institute at The University of Oxford, reporting on the new vulnerability and fragility of institutional power in a new media age. Prior to joining the BBC, Nik worked at ITN where he was bureau chief in Rome and Warsaw for 18 years. From 1989 to 1996 he was Diplomatic Editor for Channel Four News. He has been a member of the councils of Chatham House (1998 – 2004), the Royal United Services Institute (2007-present), the councils of Chatham House (1998-2004), the Overseas Development Institute (2007-present), the board of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (1996-2005) and the advisory council at Wilton Park (1998-present). In 1994 he was a fellow at the Joan Shorenstein Barone Center in the J. F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, USA. In 2007, Nik received a Special Award at the first Indian News Television Awards in recognition of his work in International news Reportage and Coverage. In 2012, Nik received an honorary doctorate from The University of Exeter for his distinguished contribution to international media and journalism.
