Wendell L. Willkie, II is senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of MeadWestvaco Corporation, a position he has held with the company, and its predecessor, Westvaco, since 1996.From 1982 to 1993, he held several senior positions within the U.S. government. Under President Reagan, he served in the White House as associate counsel to the President, and then as general counsel and chief of staff of the Department of Education. Under President George H. W. Bush, he served first as general counsel and later as the acting deputy secretary of the Department of Commerce. In 2005, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to his Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations. Mr. Willkie was the co-author and editor with Ambassador James R. Lilley of Beyond MFN: Trade with China and American Interests (AEI Press, 1994), which strongly advocated permanent, normal US-China trade relations when that issue was controversial in Washington. He is a trustee of the China Institute of America and Member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Mr. Willkie earned his B.A. from Harvard College and M.A. from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He holds a J.D. from University of Chicago.
