Mr. Andrew Forrest is known as Australia's mining visionary and leading philanthropist. He was responsible for the creation of Australia's laterite nickel industry before founding FMG, a success story so powerful it spawned an entire new industry of iron ore and resource developers. As an Asian focused company it is also the fourth largest iron ore supplier in the world, and a key player in the region’s iron ore and steel industry. Mr. Forrest is FMG's major shareholder, Chairman of the Board and has long been driving Australia's co-operation with China. Highlighting that commitment, Fortescue has, for many years, been either the largest or one of the largest sponsors of the Boao Forum for Asia. Mr. Forrest also co-founded the Australia China Senior Business Leaders Forum, bringing together the two countries most eminent leaders, deepening and strengthening the bilateral relationship through dynamic appreciation of arts, business, culture and philanthropy. Mr. Forrest’s charity, ACT, was recently a partner in China’s first official international conference on philanthropy. Named as Australia's wealthiest person over the last several years, Mr. Forrest recently signed the Giving Pledge to contribute the vast majority of his fortune to the least fortunate. He is Chairman of ACT, which has already donated over $260 million to various causes. The Forrest family is also historically one of the most well-known political families in Australia. Both his great-grand father and great-uncles were statesman, and were the only brothers in the group known as the Founding Fathers that wrote Australia's constitution to crystallize the Australian Federation in 1901. Their names are carved into the wall of Parliament House of Australia. FMG currently has an annual output of 100 million tones. Since 2008, it has delivered some 250 million tones of iron ore to China. With iron ore growing strongly, FMG has recently invested more than US$10 billion for expansion, which will enable its production to grow to 155mtpa this year. FMG’s comprehensive relationship with China includes major shareholders, bankers, customers and suppliers, Chinese board members and leadership level executives. Mr. Forrest has been awarded the Australian Centenary Medal, the Australia Sports Medal, Australian Social Entrepreneur of the Year, West Australia Citizen of the Year, and The International Mining Journal’s Lifetime Achievement Award, yet he maintains that the toughest and most rewarding job he’s done is raising kids.
