2005-05-25 11:30
Your Excellencies,Ladies and gentlemen

We have before us this afternoon a session that is intended to take 2 hours on a subject which, if we look at it, really is an extension of the discussions that have been started off by the leaders of our different countries from this part of the world this morning at the opening session. Now, the particular topic that we have been assigned this afternoon is entitled Challenges for World Economic Growth and it is intended that this discussion is in a general manner, which means that each one of those speaking will be able to cover this particular aspect of the subject this afternoon from his own perspective, if not from the perspective of his country and/or his region. We have with us here such a variety of presentations that we really need have a variety of views on this question of challenges that world economic growth is facing.

What I intend to do this afternoon is, first of all and foremost, to call upon each and every one of the members of the panel to speak to you directly within a restricted time of 5 minutes or so. I am using the word"or so" because I know the reality of speakers when they have the podium. And then at the end of it, I will open the discussion to you with a Q&A session and of course, for the participation for you to express your views on the subject but, again, within limitations in terms of time. The idea is to have a long enough period of time for discussion to make you or enable you to participate in discussing this very important yet wide-ranging subject of challenges for world economic growth. I do not intend to introduce each one of the speakers in accordance or to read their CVs. I will just call them by their names and titles and then they will speak. I do not intend to hit the devil if they take more than 5 minutes. I will leave it to the good judgment to try to restrict time in a reasonable manner. And at this juncture, I do not intend to make any opening remarks because a lot have been said this morning and I am sure that a lot will be said by the 7 distinguished participants in this panel. I, of course, being Chairman, may take the opportunity of putting the last word. That's the beautiful thing of being Chairman.

Without further to say, let me now give the floor to Mr. Zhou Xiaochuan, Governor, People's Bank of China.
