Mr. Fidel V. Ramos is the current Chairman of the Boao Forum for Asia, Chairman of Ramos Peace and Development Foundation; Honorary Director of the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation; founding member of the Policy Advisory Commission; World Intellectual Property Organization; Trustee of the International Crisis Group; Honorary Member of the World Water Commission for the 21st Century and Honorary Lifetime President of Christian Democrats International. During the years 1993-1997, under Mr. Fidel V. Ramos, as the 12th President of the Republic of the Philippines, (1992-1998), the Philippine economy recovered dramatically and a comprehensive Social Reform Agenda (SRA) was implemented that addressed long-standing problems. Average income of the Filipino family grew more during his administration than in the preceding two decades. He pushed for the deregulation of key industries and the liberalization of the economy. He encouraged the privatization of public entities and modernization of public infrastructure through an expanded Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) law. He achieved a peace agreement with military rebels and the secessionist MNLF, for which he won the coveted 1997 UNESCO Peace Award --- the first for Asians.[Text of Speech] |
