Bo'ao Forum for Asia Seeks New Role for Asia
Beijing, January 19, 2005- Today, Mr. Long Yongtu, Secretary General of the Bo'ao Forum for Asia(BFA), announced that the BFA Annual Conference 2005 would be held on April 22--24 in the scenic town of Bo'ao, Hainan in China. "Asia Searching for Win-Win: New Role of Asia" is the main theme of BFA Annual Conference 2005. BFA expects over 1,000 senior government officials, famous business leaders, influential economists and academic luminaries from Asia as well as other parts of the world to participate in high-level dialogue covering issues including economic growth, trade and investment, and social development. Confirmed government leaders include Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
"For the fourth year in a row, the BFA has received strong support from regional and international governments and business communities in anticipation of this year's conference" said Mr. Long Yongtu, Secretary-general of the Bo'ao Forum for Asia. "Since 2001, the BFA Annual Conference's influence in Asia has continued to grow and regional cooperation strengthened. The annual conferences have become an important platform for Asian as well as world government and business leaders to get together and discuss issues of common concerns and agree on mutually beneficial strategies for the future."
In 2004, the developed and developing world experienced robust economic growth. Ensuring a strong future for the region by creating viable and sustainable economic and social development policies for Asia is one of the Conference's main objectives. This year's Conference has taken on even greater significance following the tragic December 26th tsunami that affected 14 Asian nations. Facilitating the development of effective rebuilding strategies for those countries and building necessary support across Asia will be an essential factor to the success of the BFA Annual Conference 2005.
"The world is constantly plagued by the potential of an economic slowdown from rampant terrorist activities, sharp fluctuations in oil prices, and, as seen this year, large scale natural disasters," commented Mr. Long Yongtu. "The win-win theme is all the more relevant following the unprecedented devastation that has had such a profound effect on Asia,"
To ensure quality of the events and enhance influence of the Forum, Annual Conference 2005 will further improve both its contents and formats. According to Mr. Long, the Conference will be more responsive to the concerns on Asian and the global economy, as demonstrated by the inclusion of energy, monetary policy and exchange rate and innovation of information industry into its topics. At the request of foreign entrepreneurs, Olympic economy, for the first time, will be discussed on the Conference.
Dialogue and communications will weigh more on this year's Conference to make it even more vibrant and lively. Besides the widely-hailed luncheon sessions, audiences will have the opportunity to witness dialog between ministers and entrepreneurs and special sessions on the economy of a specific country. The first-ever special session will focus on energy cooperation between Australia and China, with the presence of H.E. John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia.
Last but not the least, according to Mr. Long, the Forum will spare no efforts satisfying demand from entrepreneurs. On this year's Conference, prestigious entrepreneurs and economists from around the world will sit together discussing issues like Corporate Governance& Competitiveness and Internationalization of Chinese Companies. Several open forums will also be conducted during the two-day conference covering a wide range of issues, e.g. real estate development and auto industry.
The BFA also announced its major sponsors for this year's Conference are TNT, Merrill Lynch, Huachen Jinbei Automotive and BMW Group, and Woodside of Australia. TNT, the leading global express, logistics and mail services provider, is this year's premier sponsor.
As the premier sponsor of 2005 BFA, TNT China CEO Mr. Ken McCall said,"A new role of Asia is emerging. Its balanced and continued growth is becoming a major factor to global development. China is playing a pivotal role in shaping this development, fueling economic recovery in the region and giving momentum to economies throughout the world. At TNT, the leading global express, logistics and mail services provider, it is our great pleasure to be the premier sponsor of 2005 Bo'ao Forum for Asia to fully support Bo'ao's mission and share its commitment to explore the unfolding role of Asia in the world, and seek solutions for sustainable development in Asia."
The high level discussions will provide an excellent opportunity for business leaders to interact with some of Asia's most influential policy and decision makers and will be the perfect setting for solidifying strong and speedy growth and integration of Asian economies.
